Art Challenge: Target Kids Propaganda Poster
November 16, 2022 at 07:12 PM PST
Posted by Soraya

Friends, Romans, Target Kids... lend us your memes. What started with one humble child lost in a Target somehow escalated into this: an independent nation-state of the children, by the children, and for the children.

Show your Target Kid spirit by creating a propaganda poster for ย (or against!) our collectivist state of lost children. Send your poster to contest@desertbus.org with the subject line "TK Poster" by 10:30pm PT!

Please use the file formats .jpg or .png and, if you're comfortable sharing, your name and pronouns so we can credit you on the air.

Hey, kid. You wanna buy a blanket? Maybe a fine tapestry? Either way, we've got long strips of decorated threads in at least two varieties and what you do with them at home is your business.

A woven tapestry recreates the Classic Desert Bus screenshot: a black road stretching into the desert, with cacti on either side, a giant sun hovering in the horizon, and a pine tree shaped car freshener.

Somewhere In Between Tucson and Vegas (Tapestry)

Ah, road trips. Nothing but you, the road, and a glorious stretch of infinite, invariable desert. Just driving and driving until you reach your destination, score one point, then turn around and drive and drive over the same road through the same stretch of desert. Then you reach your destination, turn around, and...

Well, let's just crash that bus right here and figure out what to do with this tapestry that recreates the classic Desert Bus experience. Do you want to take it home? If you do, hurry up and place your bids!

Current Bid: $2,500.87

On a green background, a gray pixel art shield with red and yellow decorations from the early games of Zelda.

Legend of Zelda Pixel Art Blanket

Da-da-da-daaaaaa! You've just stumbled on one of the best items in the game, and it's a hand-made blanket with the Hyrule Crest shield. It's 63in (160cm) in all directions and therefore the perfect size for a Princess Zelda or a queen-sized bed, your choice.

Current Bid: $2,000.00

Giveaway: Taxidermied Cactuar

A crocheted cactuar in its classic running pose. It stands on top of a round wooden stand, where two more crocheted desert stones lie.

*slaps roof of Cactuar* You can fit so many needles in this bad boy! 10,000 of them, to be precise. This Taxidermied Cactuar stands 35.5cm (14in) high and will never needle you again.

Donate $6.03 or multiples thereof before 7:30pm PT for a chance to win!

First, there were opera cakes. Then there were artistic gifts. Then there were Pringles. Then there were Timbits. And now Joe has escalated the Kindness War... again.

Here's some more of the many many things that happened during today's Alpha Flight...

D+B 2022 session 4, DM'd by Erika!

We receive a gift of Timbits from Night Watch.

Erika and Cameron share some poetry.

Jacob traps everyone in the Alpha Flight elevator and talks about Exalted 3rd edition.

Mikey leads us in a round of movie trivia.

And finally, Cameron bakes a loaf of bread.

Desert Bus for Hope is supported by many fantastic humans behind the scenes. And supporting those humans are their furry friends! We asked the volunteers and mods to introduce us to their pals... and we got so many submissions! We'll be posting these on a recurring basis throughout the run.

Photo of Flynn the dog lying on the floor.

Flynn
from Sarah Toney

This is Flynn, he is our happy little guy who will follow you around like a shadow with his full moon eyes.

Photo of Birdy and Darcy the cats.

Birdy and Darcy
from Sarah Toney

Birdy (orange) is 5 lbs smaller than Darcy but he runs the cat tree. Darcy is also a little shadow (like Flynn) but he is much more vocal about it (especially when you go into any room without him.)

Photo of Persephone the cat standing on a chair by a desk.

Persephone
from Erika Cole

This is Persephone. She is very nervous around new people, but she is super sweet and cuddly once she is used to you.

Photo of Baby the cat curled up and napping on a blanket.

Baby
from Az Martin

This is Baby, but he's also an old man, and loves sunshine, chin scritches, and his heating pad.

Hobbles, Simba, Daisy, Tigger, Princess, Leia, Precious, Maddie, and Bit Bit
from Admiral Memo

In order...

Hobbles: Loves sleeping on the box of VHS tapes. Name is from when we rescued him with a busted leg. He no longer actually hobbles.
Simba: Quite friendly. Wants to play with everyone.
Daisy: The biggest dog is a scaredy dog.
Tigger (aka Big Tig): He's the king of the cats, but defers to Princess.
Princess: Queen of the kitties. Loves her daddy.
Leia (sadly ~6 months left to live): A regal gem who will sadly go before we are ready. Loves the sun.
Precious (aka McMuffin): Loves tummy scratches. Picked up in the McDonald's parking lot.
Maddie: Too friendly for her own good. Occasionally gets beat up when she tries to play with the cats.
Bit Bit: Thinks she's the queen of the kitties, until Princess puts her in her place.
