Celebrate 10 years of Desert Bus with a one-of-a-kind plush cat bed! Everyone knows that Desert Bus is the best time of the year, but you may not have realized how much your cat loves it too. It only makes sense though – during Desert Bus their favorite human is always around the house, everyone keeps strange hours and only takes brief cat naps, and there are plenty of opportunities for pets and couch cuddles. With a subtle blue and yellow exterior and a full reproduction of the Desert Bus logo on the interior, this cat cube is a great reminder of the amazing experience that is Desert Bus.
Materials:
Blizzard fleece, ribbon, and 1″ HD36-R foam.
Measurements:
The cube measures ~17″ on all sides.
About the Artist:
Lauren has been sewing since she was 7 and now focuses mostly on cosplay and cat-based crafts. Her two cats are deeply offended every time she makes a bed that they can’t sleep in, despite the fact that they already have cubes made specifically for them. This is her 4th year contributing to the Craft-Along.
Enchanted Rose

This reassuringly benign replica brings the visual magic of the enchanted rose from the Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast into your home. In the movie, the rose and the prince have a spell cast over them; the prince is cursed to live as a beast unless he can learn to love before the magic in the rose fades. To replicate the rose’s enchanted glistening, programmable light effects are embedded into the replica’s rose and underneath the petals. The rose shines constantly, and the petals twinkle to show the magic fading. The lights are powered by a usb cable. It is a beautiful, one of a kind addition to any Disney fan’s décor!
Materials:
This prop is built around a glass dome with a wood base. The topper and golden base are made with 3d printed plastic and coated with an epoxy resin. The rose flower and petals are also 3D printed, but with transparent red plastic. The rose stem is made of dyed plastic. The light effects use 5 LEDs powered by an Arduino Gemma microcontroller.
Measurements:
The dome is 9 inches (23cm) tall and 6.5 inches (16.5cm) wide.
The usb cable is 3 feet (.9 meters) long.
About the Artist:
Alex started his prop business, Mirrored Line Props, after he had trouble finding replicas available from his favorite movies and shows. He primarily uses 3D printing, but likes to incorporate additional materials like wood, glass and aluminum for an authentic look and feel. He specializes in adding lighting and material effects to his props. This is his second year contributing props to Desert Bus, and he hopes to continue to make bigger and better props each year.

Every year as we put our teams of volunteers together, it is impossible to ignore how they really make the magic happen for us. They turn what is an overwhelming, chaotic experience into something joyful and ORGANIZED! This year we have approximately 30 people joining us on site and dedicating a week of their lives to this weird and wonderful fundraiser.

Pokemon Needlepoint

Haven’t you always wanted to catch them all? Let’s assume that for nostalgia’s sake, we can draw the line at the original 151 Pokemon – now YOU can indeed be the proud owner of a full collection without walking entirely around Australia and hoping your phone battery doesn’t die, or struggling with your old gameboy cables. This Pokemon piece is truly epic; for its completion, its crafter Keroan put in over 1 year of daily stitching for a couple hours a day! Enjoy it as an art piece to make your neighbors jealous or as a totem to complete your Dratini summoning circle – the choice is yours. If you want to be the very best like no one ever was, help out some children and become the Pokemon collector you were born to be!
Materials:
This needlepoint is made of traditional needle pointing aria, DMC pearl & matte floss. It measures 29″ by 16″ (borders are all approximately one inch for mounting).
The original pattern for this piece was created by Servotron on the Sprite Stitch forum boards.
About the Artist:
Kelly, aka Keroan, first learned to sew from her mother, who hoped to teach her to quilt and needlepoint rugs. But Kelly realized one can only have so many cats the walls before it looks too ridiculous to have friends over. Therefore, Kelly turned her needle to more geeky purposes and has ascended to a higher plane of sewing.

So, if you’re feeling a hankering to discover the nuts and bolts of game design, or maybe you’re a seasoned game designer and want an excuse to create something Desert Bus related, or maybe you’re just watching Desert Bus for Hope and are *gasp* BORED?!?!? (We forgive you, it’s fine. We’re all friends here.) Consider joining the Desert Bus Game Jam.

3D Printed Hedron

This marvellous glowing object is a 3D printed LED light up Hedron based on the Hedrons from the plane of Zendikar in Magic: The Gathering!
Hedrons are ancient stone monoliths found throughout the plane of Zendikar. When properly aligned, hedrons become powerful tools of binding. When this 3D printed version is properly aligned, it may or may not be a powerful tool of binding (it probably isn’t) but when turned on it will light up with a nice blue glow throughout, powered by six LEDs. Possibly it will bind someone to itself through mesmerized admiration…
The designs of the patterns that make up the Hedron are accurate to the papercraft Hedron version that Wizards of the Coast released.
Materials:
This was made with PLA plastic using a 3D printer, and is approximately 22 centimeters tall by 8 centimeters across. It is powered by two AAA Batteries, and held together with rare earth magnets.
Please remember that as this is a hand crafted, 3D printed item, it doesn’t have the flawlessly clean finish that you would find on a commercial product. Every part of this was designed, built, and finished by one person.
About the Artist:
Cara McNab (Carasibana) is a maker, a tinkerer, a computer technician, an amateur electronics enthusiast, a magic player, an artist (sketches and digital drawings!), a sci-fi aficionado, a goof and a cat fancier. She especially enjoys creative projects that use both physical and digital tools and materials. She has made things like a ‘working’ miniature Stargate, a custom designed and built portable hand held emulation gaming console, countless drawings and sketches, a Predator mask made with papercraft, fiberglass, and electronics. And of course, she designed and built a 3D printed light up Hedron from Magic The Gathering’s Zendikar.
Targaryen Chainmail Wall Hanging

Take what is yours with fire and blood!
Er, wait, we meant donate! For the Children! This banner of House Targaryen is made by linking together over 13,800 individual rings in the traditional European chainmail weave, using only two pairs of jewelers’ pliers. It’s made of metal, but drapes and gathers like a very heavy curtain. (The crafter is very thankful that neither fire nor blood were invoked while making this item, although it did take nearly 150 hours to create.)
Materials:
Anodized aluminum and bright aluminum rings, solid oak dowel w/ polyurethane coating. Other hardware pictured not included. Pick your own drapery brackets, hooks, or rings to match your decor.
Measurements:
Banner by itself is 19.5” wide and 35” long (50 cm wide and 89 cm long). Dowel rod measures 1” diameter and 28.5” wide (2.5 cm diameter and 72 cm wide). The whole piece weighs 4.6 lbs (2.1kg).
About the Artist:
Katherine is a lifelong crafter, dabbling in a variety of crafts and mediums (sewing, sketching, underwater basket weaving…), but chainmail and chainmail jewelry has been her primary craft-of-choice for the past 13 years. She is very happy to be contributing to the craft-along once again, and thrilled her work is a part of the big 10-year anniversary!

About the Artist:
This amazing playmat is printed with the artwork of the talented Rose Nightshade. She has been moonlighting as a freelance artist available for commission for nearly a decade, but has been an artist since the moment she was allowed to doodle with something that could make a mark. She has sold her artwork at multiple nerd centric conventions in central Florida including Megacon and many local anime conventions (when she wasn’t running around in cosplay hanging out with her friends). Most recently she has been focusing on creating furry art, but still loves rendering art of many subjects; anime, pop culture, and cartoons being a few of her favorites. She has previously donated her wand-making skills to Desert Bus, and this is her first time contributing 2D art.
